Made by Certina for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and likely issued in the early 70's, the back of the case
has the NSN (National Stock Number) engraved indicating it's use by the Australian Navy. A few of these
watches have recently appeared, and it has been reported that the Australian government has decomissioned
them and offered them for sale as surplus.
The designation DS stands for "double-security", referring to the water resistance of the case and the
rubber-mounted shock protection of the movement. The DS-3 has a water resistance rating of 1000 meters.
This watch came to me with correspondance from the Certina Watch Co. indicating a number of these watches
were also produced for a joint NASA/U.S. Navy/General Electric project called Tektite, which was a part of the
SkyLab development project. The project placed an undersea habitat on the ocean floor in a remote area of the
U.S. Virgin Islands. Project participants spent extended periods living on the ocean floor developing protocols
and routines used for future space missions.
