The Bell UH-1 "Huey" helicopter is an enduring icon of the
Vietnam War. Used in a variety of military roles, the "Huey" saw
action as a gunship, troop transport, air-assault and medi-vac.
Equipped as a troop carrier it could carry 12 troops, as a
medi-vac it carried six stretchers and an attendant. By the end of
the war, over 5,000 UH-1s had been sent to the region.
Considered by many to be the most successful
military helicopter ever produced, the "Huey" is
today in service with the USMC in UH-1H and
UH-1Y configurations. Still in service throughout
the world, Bell Helicopters continues to offer a
variety of models of the "Huey" for military,
government and commercial use.
Scubawatch trivia:
Capt. Willard, played by actor Martin
Sheen in the movie Apocalypse Now, wore
a Seiko 6105 dive watch.
Seiko 6105s were very popular with American GIs in
Vietnam, as the watch had a reputation for ruggedness
and durability in the harsh Vietnamese combat
environment. Although not a "military issue" watch, it was
readily available at the local PX.
This is the "later" of two 6105 series divers made by
Seiko and differs from the first by having a larger,
asymmetrical cushion case and the 6105B movement.
This watch was restored to its current condition by Jack
Alexyon at IWW.
